Cello.
Welcome to choitotheworld with me, Mary H.K. Choi.
If you’ve found yourself here it might because you’ve read my books.
Or because you follow me on social.
Or because you’ve read interviews or essays or features that I have written.
Or maybe one of two intermittently updated podcasts.
I live in New York. Have ADHD. Autism. And a history of disordered eating. With a sun in bulimia and dysmorphia rising. I’ve been a writer for two decades and have spent the last five years developing my books for screen.
A long time ago, I launched a magazine called Missbehave as editor-in-chief and will always love magazines.
Why subscribe?
Because we all just want to unmask. Take off your bra. Remove eyeliner. Socks. Whatever.
Why pay to subscribe?
Because, stranger fucking danger my guy.
The chat, leaving comments, asking questions, the community part of it will be a walled garden to keep the riffraff out. A paid sub is the keys to Gramercy Park. If Gramercy Park were a middle-aged Korean woman. Which, who’s to say it isn’t.
If you can’t afford it, wheedle a rich friend into getting you a gift subscription.
If nobody around you can afford it, congratulations, you are probably an artist. If that’s the case, hit me up and we can figure something out.
In any case, this will be a personal space to share unfettered, petty, vulnerable thoughts. And in the same way it is HIGHLY ANTISOCIAL to tag the person about whom one is spilling tea or else sharing a context-deficient, unflattering anecdote, I want to know who’s in here. It’s like GroupChatPlus. No outside eyes. No strange.
Think of it as a blanket FrieNDA (friend + NDA, if you don’t speak fluent portmanteau).
And if you have had a Very Good Year. Or have Consistent Secret Parental Support. Or Are Tight With a Plutocrat. Please consider the Medici/God-level founding member tier AKA the mom&dad tier to receive a 1-hour therapeutic spiritual assessment with me via Zoom.*
*I am not a spiritual leader or a therapist.
I am also willing to dispense writing advice specifically on the topic of personal essays.
Housekeeping general vibes.
It’s all about being a pal and a confidante. Please be kind and gentle in the comments. Take what you want. Leave the rest. Try not to comment on what others have shared but focus more on your own feelings and observations. You know, basic emotional hygiene. We’re all doing our best.
Questions?
You can email me at bodegabusiness666@gmail.com with pressing concerns. The pressingness of the concern will be reflected in whether or not I have responded.
But also I might do an advice column so hit me up there for that also.
OK, that’s it. The light in my sees the light in you!
